Another airline is set to deploy the A380 on a route to New York's JFK airport.
German carrier Lufthansa will begin flying the world's largest commercial passenger jet to the airport on Feb. 18, operating twice-weekly service to its Frankfurt hub.
Lufthansa says it will gradually increase the A380 frequencies on the JFK-Frankfurt route until it becomes daily service "by mid-April." The airline says the A380s will "replace the Boeing 747 and Airbus A330 long-haul jets on the existing LH 400/401 city-pair flights."
With the service, Lufthansa will become the third carrier to fly A380 to JFK. Emirates and Air France are the others.
For Lufthansa, JFK will become its fourth A380 destination, joining Beijing, Johannesburg and Tokyo.
"New York is one of the most important markets for Lufthansa, so it was imperative for us to launch transatlantic flights on our flagship aircraft to this U.S. gateway," Jens Bischof, Lufthansa's Vice President The Americas for Lufthansa, says in a release.
Lufthansa's A380s are configured with 526 seats, with eight in first class, 98 in business and 420 in coach. Lufthansa notes that its A380 service to New York will mark "the introduction of [its] brand new First Class cabin to the North American market."
