Norwegian will go for Long Haul
The low cost airline “Norwegian” is planning on driving down prices to the U.S.A and Asia from Scandinavia. Within a year, the airline says it will be possible to fly directly to New York and Bangkok on their aircraft.
It is not a question of if, but when the Norwegian can start flying intercontinental. That’s according to Anne Sissel Skånvik, communications director for Norwegian Air Shuttle from their headquarters in Oslo. In an interview today more information about the new longhaul services has been revealed.
“We do not know exactly when we can launch because everything depends on the availability of aircraft” she says.
More information will come soon, she promises.
In the last year Norwegian bought thirteen new Boeing aircraft and next year another fifteen will be delivered.
“It’s our new fuel-efficient aircraft that makes it possible to offer low fares” says Anne Sissel Skånvik.
In a recent article in the Danish press it was claimed that Norwegian was planning to locate the base for longhaul flights in Thailand, allowing them to bring in Thai cabin crew. But that has been rejected by Anne Sissel Skånvik.
“We have not decided where to put the bases. We have just said that we want to compete with companies which for example have Thai staff, nothing else”.
That one of the destinations that will be offered by Norwegians new longhaul flights is Bangkok, however, is clear.
“Yes, we will fly there and to New York from Oslo and Copenhagen. It is certain”.
But Copenhagen?
“Yes, low cost long haul flights from Copenhagen will also be offered. We are planning additional routes” she says.
More details about timetables, service levels and the aircraft operating the routes is still under wraps,
“Our CEO Bjorn Kjos will know more and will release more details in early December when we officially introduce this”
