Northrop Grumman Corporation ranked 73 in fortune 500 list of U.S industrial companies,is a $32 billion global defense and technology company formed in 1994 by merging Northrop Aircraft corporation(ESTD 1939)and Grumman Aeronautical Engineering Company(ESTD 1930) .Northrop Grumman which employs over 122,000 people worldwide,is the third largest defense contractor for the U.S. military, and the number-one builder of naval vessels.

Awards and Honours:
The Collier Award 1999:In 1999,the company received the Robert J. Collier Trophy (with the Industry Team and the United States Air Force) for the design, development, production, and flight testing of the B-2 aircraft. The Collier Award is the most prestigious aviation award, annually given for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics .
Ron Brown Award2007:In December 2007, Northrop Grumman Corporation was awarded the prestigious Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership, the only Presidential award recognizing companies for outstanding achievement in employee and community relations.

History: Northrop Aircraft Incorporated was founded by John K.“Jack” Northrop in
1939.Grumman Aeronautical Engineering Company was founded by Leroy Grumman, Jake Swirbul, Bill Schwendler, E. Clint Towl and Ed Poor in 1930 .In 1931 Grumman succeeded to design 'The XFF-1',the first navy fighter with retractable landing gear and fully enclosed cockpit.In 1940 northrop produced the N-3PB patrol bomber,the first aircraft from the company .Grumman introduced the F6F Hellcat in 1944 which became a succesful U.S combat aircraft during World War II.In the same year northrop launched The P-61 Black Widow night fighter .In 1948 northrop launched the F-89 Scorpion, a heavily-armed, all-weather fighter-interceptor .In 1952 grummen tested the airworthiness of Jaguar, the first variable sweep-wing fighter.In the same time Northrop acquired Radioplane Company, a manufacturer of target drones.In 1959 First flight of the F-5, a supersonic fighter was succesfully carried out by Northrop.In the next year Grumman tested the protoype of The A6 Intruder attack aircraft and E-2A Hawkeye.In 1960 the SM-62 Snark, the first online intercontinental guided missile was delivered to American armed forces by Northrop corporation and in the following year they delivered The T-38 supersonic trainer to U.S. Air Force .DUring vietnam war the,A-6 Intruder, the world's only all-weather attack bomber was used succesfully by Navy and Marine Corps squadrons. Northrop corporation also produced some finest combat aircrafts like F-20 Tigershark,the fastest scramble time of any fighter in the world(1982),B-2 stealth bomber(1989),and YF-23(1991-stealth,unofficially known as black window).Apollo Lunar Module ,designed and manufactured by Grumman carried man to the surface of the moon in 1969.some of the military aircrafts made by Grumman include ,The EA-6B Prowler(1969),and EF111-A(1977). In 1994 Grumman Aeronautical Engineering Company was acquired by Northrop Corporation to form Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Remotec: a subsidiary, is the foremost manufacturer of remote control vehicles for explosive ordnance disposal and hazardous material handling.

Park Air Systems:Park Air Systems A UK-based subsidiary,makes navigation, traffic control, and communications equipment for international customers.Vinnell, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary within the Technical Services sector, provides training and communications services for the military.


Westinghouse Electric Corporation: Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 1996, it is part of the Electronic Systems sector .The Electronic Systems sector is a leading designer, developer, and manufacturer of a wide variety of advanced defense electronics and systems.Electronic Systems is headquartered in the Baltimore metropolitan area.


Logicon Corporation :Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 1997,it is part of the Information Technology sector.It is a Provider of military and commercial information systems and services to meet the needs of its national defense, civil and industrial customers .


Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical:Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 1999, it is part of the Integrated Systems sector.It is involved in the designing and production of unmanned airborne reconnaissance, surveillance, deception and target systems.



Litton Industries:In 2001 Northrop Grumman acquired Litton Industries ,a shipbuilder and provider of defense electronics systems to the U.S. Navy,U.S. Coast Guard, and international navies.The company was actually founded by Charles Bates "Tex" Thornton in 1953Electro Dynamics Corporation and changed the name to Litton Industries after acquiring a small electron tube company from Charles Litton .Litton Industries makes inertial navigation systems,Ticonderoga-class ships with Aegis weapons systems, night vision goggles , laser radars,information systems, marine electronics and commercial electronics.Today it is part of the Shipbuilding, Electronic Systems and Information Technology sectors under Northrop Grumman.


Newport News Shipbuilding :Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2001, it is part of the Shipbuiliding sector of the company.Orginally founded as Chesapeake Dry Dock & Construction Company by Collis P. Huntington in 1886, Newport News Shipbuilding deliverd its first ship in 1891.Today it makes Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers and Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarines.
Achievements:

California Microwave Systems :Acquiredby Northrop Grumman in 1999 , California microwave systems produces airborne reconnaissance and surveillance systems, government ground-based satellite communications systems, communications gateway systems, and mission planning.


Data Procurement Corporation(sector:Information Technology ) :Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 1999 it provides IT services and support to the Department of Defense and various intelligence agencies within the U.S. Government.

Navia Aviation AS : Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2000, this Norwegian electronics company makes systems for air traffic navigation and surveillance applications.


Comptek Research Incorporated :Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2000 ,Comptek Research Incorporated produces systems for electronic warfare and information dominance .
Federal Data Corporation and Sterling Software Incorporated were Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2000 are coming under the information technology sector.


Aerojet General Corporation's Electronics and Information Systems Group:Acquired by in 2001 ,it produces spaceborne sensors for early warning systems, weather systems, and ground systems.

Fibersense Technology Corporation (2002):2001,this comapny is invloved in the design and production of precision fiber optic gyroscopes, inertial measurement units, and sensor components for missile, aircraft, sea, and land applications.

XonTech :Acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2003,XonTech is coming under missile systems sector and is specialized in missile defense, and sensor and intelligence data analysis.Illgen Simulation Technologies is an another company acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2003 is also coming under missile systems group.
