Currently, according to experts Karniol, Vietnam is negotiating to buy 12 short-range transport aircraft Let L-410 of the Czech Republic. The aircraft will mainly be used for food relief, food for the army and people in the border areas and islands or remote which means it is difficult to access.

In addition to looking to buy weapons from the Czech Republic, Vietnam also pay attention to the supply from India. According to The Asian Age, past the April 20/09, India Joint Group - Russia BrahMos Aerospace Vietnam prepares for sale of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos made by this group.

Turkey and Indonesia are close to signing several defense agreements altogether worth $400 million, procurement officials and industry sources said Tuesday.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, and Turkey have increasingly closer political relations, and their industrial ties also are boosting. The two countries decided to bolster their defense cooperation when President Abdullah Gül visited Jakarta in April as a guest of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, when the two nations signed a defense industry pact.

Later, major defense industry companies from both nations met multiple times to explore potential areas of cooperation. They decided to work together in military electronics, rockets and armored vehicles.

As a result, Aselsan, Turkey’s military electronics powerhouse, and its Indonesian counterparts agreed on Aselsan’s production of several types of military radios and other wireless equipment for the Indonesian military.

Roketsan, Turkey’s state-owned rocket maker, reached a general agreement to produce various short-range rockets for the Indonesians.

Meanwhile, private Turkish vehicle-maker FNSS agreed to develop a 6X6 wheeled tactical vehicle for the Indonesians. FNSS already is the maker of 6X6 and 8X8 Pars armored vehicles. Under the agreement with Indonesia, FNSS will modify the Pars 6X6 and then the two sides jointly will manufacture it.

The Aselsan deal is expected to be signed before the year ends, industry sources told the Hürriyet Daily News. Roketsan and the FNSS deals are expected to be closed in 2012. The Aselsan agreement should exceed $100 million, and the two other deals are expected to cost around $150 million both.

Separately, a team of German and Turkish companies and Turkey’s procurement agency are seeking to jointly sell two HDW-class Type-209 submarines to Indonesia’s navy. They are competing against South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine.

HIMARS - High Mobility Artilerry Rocket System (photos : Cyberpioneer, Area51)

Pinpoint accuracy over distances as long as 70 kilometres. This is just one of the capabilities which the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) brings to the table.

On 5 Sep, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially welcomed the HIMARS into its fold with a ceremony to mark its commissioning and the operationalisation of the first HIMARS battery at Khatib Camp.

During the ceremony, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen saw a demonstration of the deployment and operation of the HIMARS as part of a networked force that included other land platforms.

In his speech, Dr Ng said: "The successful induction of the HIMARS reflects well on the ability of the SAF to respond decisively to new challenges and changing circumstances in its operational environment."

Equipped with the Battlefield Management System (BMS), the HIMARS is fully connected to its command headquarters and Strike Observer Mission Teams on the ground. Other SAF air and land platforms, such as fighter aircraft and infantry fighting vehicles, are also connected via the BMS.

With the enhanced situational awareness and transmission of critical battlefield information provided by the BMS, the HIMARS can quickly respond to calls for fire and deliver precision fire on targets.

Deadly accurate and mobile, each HIMARS launcher can dispatch its six rockets within 45 seconds to targets 70km away with an accuracy of 10 metres. Its 6.6 litre turbo-charged diesel engine powers the almost 16-ton behemoth to a top speed of 94kmh.

"With its long range and speed, the HIMARS can stay well behind the front line. When opposing forces open fire, we are able to stay well out of its range but yet still be able to deliver accurate counter-fire." explained Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Koh, Commanding Officer, 23rd Battalion Singapore Artillery (23 SA).

While the Singapore Army's 3rd Generation transformation leverages on technology that provides superior weaponry and reduces reliance on manpower, it translates into heavier responsibilities for the three-man crew which operates each HIMARS launcher. "It is ultimately the professionalism and commitment of our people that will translate the latest weapon systems into effective capabilities," said Dr Ng.

This message was not lost on each of the crew members who work as a tightly integrated team to operate the HIMARS. "When the fire mission comes down, all three of us are very independent and we know exactly what to do," said Full-time National Serviceman 3rd Sergeant Daniel Tan, citing the comprehensive training which the Battery has undergone in the past 12 months.

The SAF took delivery of the HIMARS in July last year, and conducted its inaugural battery live firing in November 2010 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, US.

The HIMARS, which is operated by Bravo Battery of 23 SA, provides artillery forces with precision fire power, enhanced mobility and advanced networking capabilities.

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) provides artillery forces with precision fire power, enhanced responsiveness, mobility, protection, and also networks soldiers and air and land weapon platforms, thus facilitating the delivery of information, and fires in the battlefield.

The key features of the HIMARS are:

Enhanced Fire Power
The HIMARS carries a single pod of six Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) rockets and is designed to launch the entire MLRS family of munitions. The Guided MLRS M31 Unitary rockets used are 227mm surface-to-surface inertial guided and Global Positioning System-aided weapons. Each rocket contains a single 200-pound class controlled fragmentation high explosive unitary warhead capable of providing lethal and precise fires. The HIMARS is able to strike targets as far as 70 km away.

Enhanced Responsiveness
The HIMARS requires less than 20 seconds to be prepared for firing and a full launcher load of six rockets can be fired within 45 seconds.

Enhanced Mobility

The HIMARS is powered by a 6.6-litre, six-cylinder turbo-charge diesel engine that delivers 330 horsepower, providing a top speed of 94km/h. This allows for rapid withdrawal after launching of munitions, enhancing crew and equipment survivability.

Enhanced Protection

The HIMARS is equipped with the Increased Crew Protection cabin, which is designed to protect the three-man operating crew against plume gases, rocket launch debris and small arms.

Enhanced Networking Capabilities

The HIMARS is equipped with the Battlefield Management System (BMS) which enables it to connect with the Artillery Headquarters and Strike Observer Mission Teams on the ground as well as other air and land platforms, such as infantry fighting vehicles, main battle tanks, attack helicopters and fighter aircraft. With enhanced situational awareness and transmission of key battlefield information provided by the BMS, the HIMARS can respond quickly to call-for-fires and deliver precision fires on enemy targets.

Brazil releases funds to develop surface to surface missile system for the Army

The Brazilian government gave a clear signal Monday that is intends to advance in the consolidation of a defense industry in the country. A decree signed by President Dilma Rousseff releases 45 million Real in funds for the launching of the Astros Project 2020 to equip the Brazilian army.

The project with a total value of almost 1.1 billion Real provides for the acquisition of the most advanced surface to surface missile launch system developed in Brazil. The Astros 2020 is an evolved version of the Astros II, the best selling product manufactured by Avibras Aerospace.

Exported to many countries the Astros (Artillery SaTuration ROcket System) is considered a market-leader among the small and highly competitive group of manufacturers of such systems.

Altogether the project includes the purchase of 49 vehicles by the Brazilian army divided into three batteries: 18 launch vehicles, 18 ammo re-supply vehicles, three fire control units, three weather stations, three recovery vehicles and three armoured command and control vehicles for each battery and another final vehicle for integrated command and control.

The main advantage of the new concept is the incorporation of the AV-TM, a high precision cruise missiles with a range of 300 kilometers. Unlike the rockets, which have a ballistic trajectory, defined from the impulse they receive at launch, this missile is guided and its trajectory can be controlled. Another important advance is the in the electronics system which is entirely digital.

Astros II MLRS (photo : Militaryphotos)

The Astros II are normally grouped in artillery batteries consisting on average of about 13 vehicles: 6 of them are Astros II launchers, 6 are rocket resupply trucks and one a special radar-equipped vehicle controlling the fire control system. The launcher is capable of firing rockets of different calibers armed with a range of warheads.

The Astros II artillery system entered service with the Brazilian Army in 1983. The system is battle proven, having been used in action by the Iraqi Army in the Gulf Wars. In the 1980s, Avibrás sold an estimated sixty-six Astros II artillery systems to Iraq. Iraq also built the Sajil-60 which is a license-built version of the Brazilian SS-60. Sixty Astros II were sold to Saudi Arabia and an unspecified number sold to Bahrain and Qatar. Total sales of the Astros II between 1982 and 1987 reached one billion dollars.

This fact made the Astros II multiple rocket launcher the most profitable weapon produced by Avibrás.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, Avibrás worked almost exclusively with the manufacturing of rockets and multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), such as the Astros II, in addition to developing antitank and anti-ship missiles. At its peak, Avibrás employed 6,000 people; later it would be reduced to 900 people in the early 1990s as the arms industry demand fell. Even so, in the first Gulf War in 1991, the Astros II was successfully used by Saudi Arabia against Iraq. Years later, the Astros II system helped Angola to defeat the UNITA rebels.

New rocket battalion planned

The army has plans for a new battalion to be equipped with multi-barrel rocket launchers (MBRLs), attached to the existing Lop Buri-based Artillery Division, an army source said.

Under the plan, a large number of MBRLs will be bought from the Defence Technology Institute (DTI), an organisation under the Defence Ministry.

DTI, in collaboration with the army of China, has produced a prototype DTI-1 MBRL, using technology transferred from China.

On Monday, Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon and army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the Artillery Division in Lop Buri where they took receipt of the first of the MBRLs developed by DTI.

MBRL systems are in wide use with the Cambodian military, which has large numbers of them.

The source said the plan ned new battalion has the support of the prime minister, who sees it as a way of boosting the army's capability.

At the hand-over ceremony, Gen Prayuth said it has been the army's wish since 1988 to have a rocket company. At present, the defence minister has approved in principle the development of MBRLs and the newly developed weapon has been tested.

Lt-Gen Thitinan Tunyasiri, the DTI director, said the MBRL prototype is very important as its technology can be use to develop a guided missile system to respond to demands from various army units.

In the near future, the DTI will proceed with other projects to build unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), signal jammers, combat auxiliary systems, and amphibious assault vehicles (AAV), to reduce reliance on imports from abroad, he said.

Later Air Chief Marshal Herns Pun Si Chairman of the DTI to deliver weapons to the list, the Minister of Defence to forward to Gen. Praiutht Monday Ocha commander in chief and delivered to a Major General Chamnong Sukit the Division Commander of artillery as a user.

After the military was walking multiple launch rocket system, a DTI-1, which before that, the division artillery was firing demonstration set of this missile system by missile system using the regular troops of the 711th artillery battalion that has been trained to work with this missile system. This missile system consists of two car spaces. The first car as a car packed with rocket dock rocket carried four shots of the car and another car fired a shot at the podium, which is installed with 4 shots can be fired with the fire control room in front of the car.

After receiving the target position to make a shot then. Rider will be moving to a location where fire. The vehicle will have stand number four hydraulic legs, which will press down on the floor during the fire to secure to the car.

Troops will use data from many parts of the evidence or to determine the angle shot direction angle sector to adjust the firing platform in place that can be fired accurately. Except for the coordinates of the target will be fired then. Weather information is also required to keep the ball moving a projectile rocket that runs toward the goal. The car will be on the fire control room, where troops use the computer to find the necessary values and process the evidence came out firing.

After the shooting evidence. Troops will raise more platforms in the corners and angle direction is determined out of the region. The firing platform can be upgraded to either an automatic lift, which will be controlled from the control room, shooting and hand-raised by force by aiming the camera mounted inside the vehicle.

After firing platform into the correct position and ready for firing and then. Troops regularly checks the vehicle's electrical firing platform for the last time to make sure everything is ready system. Ask permission before shooting.

The actual shooting. The ball ran to the rocket fire from the platform at speeds around Mach 5 or five times the speed of sound. And travel time to the target at a distance shot far at 180 km approximately 2 minutes of firing can be either shot pan each meeting and fired a Seeoy is set and the ball rockets an appointment with a radius of destruction was about a field football.

When shooting finished. Missiles can be loaded cars containing the new rockets and four shots within 20 minutes to be ready to shoot again In the current system rocket several barrel a DTI-1 is a general missile that is not the way the DTI project to develop navigation systems for installation with rocket a DTI-1 to increase the efficiency and accuracy in shooting a lot more.

Minister of Defense, said during an interview at one of the reporters. In the past, Thailand imported samples bent arms from abroad. This is a budget issue to a foreign country. And there are several limitations that could not supply weapons they need. Ministry of Defence has a policy to promote national defense industry by using the Institute of Defence Technology (ITD), a research agency and develop a prototype weapon systems to force to strengthen the army and the nation.

Director of Defence Institute of Technology (ITD), said the one that the defense industry is a challenging task but if done successfully. In addition, Thailand will have an opportunity to use weapons and self-produced. Technology ownership in Thailand can also make maintenance and development of weapons systems to improve their next In addition to strengthening and building self-reliance and the military. Research and development to create knowledge to improve the country's science and technology, boost economy and create jobs for the Thai.

This roll-division artillery, as the prototype implementation will be multiple launch rocket a DTI-1 to the training and trial to find flaws and make recommendations to the DTI to develop a missile system in the next version.
