Split Airport won’t shiver alone this winter season

The Croatian seaside city of Split suffers from highly seasonal passenger movement. While the city’s airport welcomes multiple airlines during the summer, the winter season is a different affair with almost no air services. However, all is about to change. Thanks to the Split-Dalmatian hotelier association, Split should have more quality air connections to other European cities during the 2009/2010 winter season, which commences at the end of October. Until now, the main problem from October to March had been a lack of direct flights. Last year, during the summer, Split was connected to 43 cities but during the 2008/2009 winter season to only 6. The association is planning to make marketing agreements with all airlines that decide to introduce flights during the low-season.

So far 3 airlines, Croatia Airlines, easyJet and Dubrovnik Airline, have shown the most interest in commencing services from Split. The national carrier Croatia Airlines has already made it possible for travellers to purchase round trip tickets for direct flights from Split to London on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Split to Munich on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at prices of up to 165 Euros. If the trial period displays good results, Croatia Airlines will keep the flights during the winter season and also intensify its winter connections to Frankfurt and Rome. The association believes such a move would bring more tourists from the UK, Germany and Italy to the Dalmatian region during the winter. The association is also researching the possibility for winter season air links to cities such as Paris and Moscow.
