Runway work complete for now at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport

Construction and expansion work at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is ongoing. The runway upgrade and expansion has now been complete. The full 3.300 metres of the runway are now in use and the instrument landing system is operating again. This marks the conclusion of the first two phases of runway renovation at Ljubljana Airport. The reconditioning of the runway includes resurfacing the asphalt as well as expanding parts of the taxiways, replacing the lighting system and installing additional cable conduits. The project is being carried out in three phases, with two planned for this year, one covering the north-western and the other the south-eastern sections of the runway. The first phase, covering around 800 metres, was concluded on June 25, while the reconditioning of the other section, involving over 1.000 metres of runway, was completed in the early hours July 15. Reconditioning of the central section of the runway will start in the second quarter of 2010.

The reconditioning of the runway has been carried out in line with plans, and despite several days of bad weather, the project was concluded within the envisaged deadlines. During construction work, traffic at the airport proceeded normally, although the runway functioned with certain restrictions. While work was in progress, only 2.100 metres of the runway were in use, although this is sufficient for all types of aircraft that regularly take off or land at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. On the night between July 4 and 5, a unique kind of record was achieved, with a full 3.500 tonnes of asphalt being laid in only 9 hours, a major achievement in construction work. The entire project, which includes the construction of a new terminal, will cost millions of Euros and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.
