Indian aircraft maker Hindustan Aeronautics published a few promising fighter specifications FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft), created in cooperation with Russia on the basis of combat aircraft T-50 (PAK FA). According to the description, the Indian version of the aircraft will be network-centric and will act in a group with other FGFA even in areas with "poor communication".

FGFA length was 22.6 meters, height - 5.9 meters, and maximum takeoff weight - 34 tons. The aircraft will be able to fly to a distance of 3.88 kilometers and a speed of two Mach numbers (2.3 thousand kilometers per hour). Will be installed on FGFA engines with thrust vector control management and a maximum deviation of the nozzles 15 degrees.

Each of the two engines of the fighter will be able to develop a thrust of 1,400 kilograms-force (13.7 kilonewton). Probably, this parameter contains an error. For comparison, the turbojet engine AL-41F1S (installed on the Su-35s) is capable of a thrust of 8.8 thousand kilograms-force, and 15 000 pounds-force in regime afterburner.

At the end of September 2011 it became known that the command of the Indian Air Force has selected engines for future fighter aircraft, but did not specify what kind. Reported only that the power plants will be stronger for FGFA AL-41F1 ("Item 117"), intended for prospective fighter T-50.

FGFA will be able to fly at supersonic speed in cruise mode, and maneuver at supersonic speed. In the inner compartment of the fighter can be placed in a mass of weapons to 2.25 tons, and on external pylons - weighing up to 5.75 tonnes. Indian fighter jet fuselage will be made with the use of stealth technology. It should be noted that the development of FGFA in the design stage, so many options listed HAL, can change in one direction or another.Specifications PAK FA until classified.

The contract for the joint development of FGFA was signed by Russia and India in late 2010. Indian version of the aircraft will be established on the basis of the PAK FA, but it will be different from the last version with a single and a double cockpit, engines and airborne equipment. Earlier it was reported that the first flight is scheduled for FGFA 2015. Indian Air Force is going to adopt a 250 fighter FGFA.

The proposed FGFA will have air combat superiority, high tactical capability, group action capability in the regions even with poor communication support. The aircraft will have advanced features like

 Increased Stealth - Low radar cross-section (RCS), Internal deployment of weaponry
 Supersonic cruise and supersonic maneuvering capability
 Data link and network centric warfare capability.

Technical Parameters
-Length : 22.6 m
-Height : 5.9 m
-MTOW : 34 Ton
-Range : 3880 km
-Speed : 2 Mach
-Max Weapon Load : 2.25 Ton (Int.) & 5.75 Ton (Ext)
-Thrust Vectoring : With Jet Nozzle (±15 ยบ)
-Engine Thrust : 2X1400 kgf

FGFA will be co-developed with Russians. Sukhoi Design Bureau (SDB) has been selected as the Russian agency for this development project.

Delivery of the warship as per schedule in Dec 2012

India and Russia ended their high-level defence cooperation meeting at Moscow late on Thursday with Russia assuring that the sea-based aircraft carrier, Admiral Gorshkov will start sea trials off the Russian coast by November this year. Delivery of the ship to India will be as per schedule in December 2012.

The 45,000 tonne, 283-metre aircraft carrier will fly the naval version of the MiG 29 off its deck. The fighters are already in India and based at Goa. At present, the Indian Navy has one aircraft carrier, the INS Viraat and is building one of its own at Kochi that is to be named INS Vikrant. The development of an craft carrier is crucial as China is set to launch its first-ever such ship which is also a old Russian carrier being re-fitted.

Sources said the Indian Defence Ministry team led by Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar visited the ship yard at Sevmash in North-Western Russia to see the development. Gorshkov is being re-fitted as per the Indian requirements. Teams at the shipyard are working overtime and around the clock to meet the schedule. The cost escalation and delay in the ship had caused a strain on the 50-year-old Indo-Russian ties. It needed the intervention of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev who himself took care that all contracts are signed.

Meanwhile, a section of the Indian delegation was also shown a test flight of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) that the two countries are co-developing. The development of design alone will cost close to $ 6 billion.

Indian Defence Budget Hiked by 11.6 Per Cent

02 Maret 2011

NEW DELHI (PTI): With some major deals expected to be clinched this year, Government Monday substantially raised its defence budget by 11.6 per cent to Rs 1,64,415 crore for 2011-12 from last year's Rs 1,47,344 crore.

Of the total outlay, Rs 69,199 crore has been allocated for the acquisition of modern and new weapon systems, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, presenting the Budget in Lok Sabha.

However, the hike is 8.47 per cent on the basis of revised estimates of Rs 1,51,582 crore for the same year.

With several big ticket deals to likely to be finalised this year, the capital expenditure for defence forces has been hiked by Rs 8,366 crore from Rs 60,833 to Rs 69,199 crore.

Defence Ministry sources said the 13.75 per cent hike in capital expenditure has been made keeping in mind the big ticket deals to procure 126 multi-role combat aircraft, 197 light helicopters, 145 Ultra-light Howitzers and C-17 heavy-lift aircraft.

These deals are likely to be signed this year.

From the Rs 69,199 crore capital outlay, the Army got around Rs 18,988 crore, Navy Rs 5,688 crore, Naval Fleet Rs 7,320 crore and Air Force Rs 29,722 crore.

The largest share of the increased capital expenditure would go to the IAF, which will spend Rs 22,055 crore for procuring fighter and transport aircraft and helicopters of different types and origin in this decade.

India has plans of spending over USD 100 billion on defence acquisitions in the next five to 10 years.

The Finance Minister also said the Government is ready to provide any additional support saying, "Needless to say, any further requirement for the country's defence would be met.

"Of the total revenue expenditure of Rs 95,216 crore allocation for the next fiscal, the Army has been granted Rs 64,251 crore, Navy Rs 10,589 crore, Air Force Rs 15,928 crore and DRDO Rs 5,624 crore.

Sources said the defence budget accounts for the 13.07 per cent of the total expenditure to be made by the Central government in the next fiscal.

Terming the hike in allocation for his Ministry as "good and positive", Defence Minister A K Antony said, "we welcome it as our concerns have been by and large addressed and Finance Minister has stated that if we have any fresh requirements, it would be made up without any difficulty."

Despite the hike of Rs 17,071 crore, the defence expenditure continues to hover around the 2.5 per cent mark of country's GDP and remains much less than the percentage of it spent by adversaries China and Pakistan.

India is world's tenth largest defence spender and its acquisitions account for around 2 per cent of the world's total spending on weapons and arms.

China and Pakistan are estimated to be spending over USD 90 billion and USD 10 billion respectively on their military modernisation annually. The government has also earmarked Rs 118 crore for prototype development under make category in this budget, which is likely to be shared between both private and public sector concerns in the defence sector.

After the 1971 war, the Defence Ministry has for the first time utilised the full budget of Rs 60,000 crore for capital acquisitions. For 2009-10, the ministry had returned Rs 5,539 crore unspent.
