Singapore approves Singapore Airlines- Virgin alliance

Singapore Airlines said on Thursday the Competition Commission of Singapore had approved its proposed alliance with Virgin Australia.
The alliance involves code-sharing on each other's flights, better flight schedules and connections, access to more airport lounges, as well as greater opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles, the Singapore flag carrier said.
Virgin had been looking for a partner in Asia after forming alliances and partnerships with Delta Air Lines, Etihad and Air New Zealand.
The alliance is aimed at connecting Singapore Airlines' international network with Virgin's routes within Australia and in the Pacific.

Singapore Airlines (SIA)' history can be traced back to 1st May 1947, when Malayan Airways operated its first commercial flight linking Singapore with Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. The airline was later renamed Malaysian Airways (1963) and Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (1966), which was split in two in 1972, creating Malaysian Airline System (since renamed Malaysia Airlines) and SIA. Over a period of more than half a century, SIA has earned a reputation as an innovative market leader, combining a quality product with excellent service.
SIA has a route network extending to 63 destinations in 35 countries, serving Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East, the South West Pacific, and Africa.
SIA has one of the youngest fleets of any major airline, with an average age of just over 6 years. The airline operates a fleet of Boeing 747-400s, 777s, Airbus A330-300s, A340-500s and took delivery of the world’s first A380-800 for commercial service in October 2007.
Excellence in customer service has been integral to SIA's success. Superb inflight service is the cornerstone of its reputation for customer service and hospitality. SIA has developed a reputation for being an industry trend-setter. The list of industry-leading innovations by SIA includes being the first to offer free headsets, a choice of meals and free drinks in Economy Class in the 1970s, and the first with satellite-based inflight telephones in 1991. SIA has also taken inflight dining to new heights with the formation of its International Culinary Panel. In 2004, Singapore Airlines created aviation history with the introduction of the world’s longest non-stop ultra long-haul commercial services between Singapore and New York (Newark).
The care and attention that Singapore Airlines gives its customers, symbolised by the Singapore Girl, has earned the airline many industry and travel awards, including Conde Nast Traveller's "Best Global Airline" award for 21 consecutive years, Travel and Leisure’s “Best International Airline” award for 14 consecutive years, and Wall Street Journal Asia’s “Most Admired Singapore Company” accolade for 17 consecutive years.

Singapore Airlines fuel surcharge increase

Singapore Airlines said on Friday it will increase its fuel surcharge for tickets issued on or after April 21 as jet fuel prices have risen more than 30 percent since the beginning of the year.
The firm said the increase in fuel surcharge will be between USD$4 and USD$32 per sector, depending on the distance and class of travel. It will apply to Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights.
The price of jet fuel is now more than USD$138 per barrel, the highest level in two years, SIA said in a statement.

Virgin Atlantic merger partner confirmed

Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson has confirmed the airline is seeking a merger partner, ending months of speculation.
Earlier this year Branson appointed Deutsche Bank AG to assess options for the 51 per cent stake his Virgin Group holds in the airline.
Singapore Airlines holds the remaining share of the airline.
While it is now likely Branson will sell down his share, he will remained involved.
“I will certainly still be extremely involved in the airline, whatever we decide to do, and I will still be a major shareholder,” Branson said in an interview with Bloomberg.
“We are in discussions with various people and will see what comes out of it,” he added.
Virgin Atlantic has seen a growing need to merge with a rival or join an airline alliance to survive in the increasingly competitive world of aviation.
The growth of cross-border super carriers has played a major role. For example, the partnership of American Airlines and British Airways on profitable transatlantic routes has hit Virgin.
At present Virgin Atlantic has 288 takeoff and landing slots at Heathrow.
This represents three per cent of the total and would allow any potential buyer to add flights to US and Asian business markets.
